Mount Kasuga Primeval Forest


Deep green and spiritual atmosphere. If you expect to have such an experience in Japan, Kasuga Primeval Forest is the one to visit. The mountain is the sacred area behind of the Kasuga Shrine. Although many people visit Kasuga Shrine, Todaiji Temple, and Kofukuji-Temple in Nara, not many visitors walk into this forest.

The word, "Primeval" may give you some pictures of rocky road. However, the trail is paved and easy to find.

If you chose to walk a route which makes circle starting from Kasuga Shrine, it would take about four to five hours. You can even walk a short course such as just going up to top of Mt.Wakakusa and come back. It would be a two-hour course.

It is said that this stone buddhism image's head was cut off by a famous samurai.

Nara is an ancient city. It is even older than Kyoto as a capital. There are many temples and shrines. Many visitors walk by in the town. Sometime you may be overwhelmed by numbers of visitors. In such a case, please try to step in Kasuga Primeval Forest. You will be surprised the quietness of the trail. You will encounter to trail runners and walkers who greet you "Hi" or "Konnichiwa" with smiling.

This forest has been considered as a sacred area for over 1,000 years.

It has been forbidden to cut down trees. You will see tall trees and dense greens.

Please enjoy walking through the forest which Japanese people has been respected since the ancient era.

The bus goes to the foot of the Mt. Wakakusa. The name of the bus stop is "Kasugataisha-honden" (bus number 77 or 97 from Kintetsu Nara Station)
